ERESSOS

Eressos is situated at the south- western part of the island, 90 km from the capital Mytilene. Eressos gets its name from the son of the mythical king Makar. It’s the birthplace of Sappho the poetess and Theophrastus the philosopher.

The village of Eressos is preserving the traditional ways. The main square is a picturesque place appropriate for coffee or ouzo. You can walk around the village and take a look to the traditional houses, the churches and the local school "Theophrastion” with elements of classic architecture.

Three kilometers away from the village lies Skala Eressos. Its beautiful beach (three kilometers long) has been awarded many times as the cleanest and extremely looked after, by the European Environment Comity. The beach has won the Blue Flag Award for its crystal waters and its wonderful sandy beach.

There is a veritable mix of people who visit this particular part of the island, and most of them return again and again. This small village is one of the most cosmopolitan areas on the island. Eressos is popular as a Mecca for the international Lesbian community, and a wonderful family location, not to mention a favourite place for honeymooners. At the beach, there are many restaurants, traditional taverns, bars and clubs, on the sand, right by the sea. Visitors can do some waters sports, or explore the location by taking sea trips into small boats with groups or on their own. On one part of the beach nudism is allowed.

In this village you can totally and completely relax, because it is far away from all the noise that you find in the tourist centers. The streets which border the beach are closed to all cars, making it quiet and safe to walk. More importantly you don’t have to worry about the safety of your children.

Between Eressos and Sigri is the area of the Petrified Forest, a place of great interest.  The Petrified Forest was the result of a volcanic eruption around 20 to 16 millions years ago. The intense volcanic activity buried the oaks, sequoias and other trees of the region below ash. In Sigri there is a museum dedicated to the forest which hosts some stunning examples of petrified wood.
