Forty-two kilometers from Mytilini on the southern coast of Lesvos, Plomari, the ouzo capital of Greece, is build in an amphitheater style near the sea. There are several ouzo factories and an ouzo museum on the road leading into Plomari town. This is where the famous Ouzo Varvayiannis comes from as well as several other smaller labels like the excellent Ouzo Giannatsi which is distilled in the traditional method. Apart from the excellent Ouzo, Plomari is also famous for the high-quality of olive oil.
The architecture of the town is pretty amazing with big old mansion in different colours build against the hills, old factories and olive presses. Starting from the main square of the Market Street and strolling through the narrow streets, the visitor is charmed by the architectural heritage of this town. The stone-paved streets, the old coffee shops, the most popular quarter of the town around the church Agios Nikolas, the houses with the upper projecting (sachnisia), the remains of the old industrial buildings, reveal the magnificent economical growth that Plomari encountered in the 19th century.
Plomari has a harbor full of fishing boats and private yachts. Close to Plomari are the beaches of Agios Isidoros and Agia Barbara, as well as the Tarti amd Amoudeli Beach.
