SIGRI
![]() Sigri is a small fishing village located in the west part of the island, 93 km from Mytilini and 26 km from Skala Eressos. Its name comes from the Latin word "securo” which means "safe harbor”. Sigri has a Turkish castle, built during theOttoman occupation to protect the village from piracy, as there was the most important port for the transportation trade. You can walk through the iron door and and enjoy the most wonderful views of the village, beach and bay.
There are here many fish restaurants that serve fresh catch of the day along with other local delicacies. One of the best things you can try here is lobster with spaghetti. Sigri has a sandy beach which is perfect for children as the waters are always calm and shallow near the coast. Faneromeni beach though, which is 3km from the village, is perfect for those who wish to avoid crowed places. In general the beaches in this part of the island have the most sand contrasting to the pebble beaches to the east and it is quite windy, appropriate for wind surfers. Between Eressos and Sigri you can find the Protected Natural Monument of the Petrified Forest. The Petrified Forest was the result of a volcanic eruption around 21 to 16 million years ago. The intense volcanic activity buried the oaks, sequoias and other trees of the region below ash. In Sigri there is a museum dedicated to the forest which hosts some stunning examples of petrified wood.
