VATERA
Vatera is 50 km from the island's capital of Mytilini and is located on the coast between the Gulf of Gera and the Gulf of Kalloni near the town of Polychnitos. Here you will find the longest beach on the island, 10 km long and 40 m wide. The sandy beach of Vatera has been rated as one of the best beaches of the Mediterranean and is awarded with the 'Blue Flag'. Although somebody would expect a big tourist development, Vatera has remained thankfully unspoiled and unaffected by the masses. However, it does offer the visitor some wonderful apartments, hotels, restaurants, bars and small grocery stores. Apart from swimming, fishing, snorkeling and sailing, different water sports are here also available. Because of its abundant wild life, Vatera is also famous for alternative tourism, such as birdwatching, cycling, and trekking. Keep in mind that the area between the Gulf of Gera and Gulf of Kalloni has been placed among the European Program "Special Areas of Nature's Preservation” of the net NATURA 2000.
There are also some wonderful local archaeological remains in the surrounding area like the "Temple of Dionysus” next to the chapel of Agios Fokas, the "Paliopyrgos” (small castle) and the "Achilopigado”.
The Natural History Museum of Vrisa, just 2.5 km away from Vatera, contains a big collection of Paleolithic fossils, unique not only to Greece but also to Europe. Animal fossils were discovered like the jawbone, tusks and skeleton segments of the proboscidean and mastododon "Anancus Arvenensis” which became extinct more than 1.6 million years ago and a family of giant apes of the species of "Paradolichopithecus”, the earliest in representative age ever found in Europe. The fossilised bones of a giant tortoise that have been also found indicate the size of a 2.5 meters tortoise. Furthermore, plant fossils were discovered such as aquatic carnivorous plants and bulrushes which also don't exist today. « Πίσω Επάνω |
